Charles Hoss of Warren County, Missouri


The following is taken from records and documentation received from various Hoss researchers on Charles Hoss of Warren County, Missouri.:

He was born 1794 in Maryland and died 12 Dec 1879 in Truxton, Missouri.  The History of Lincoln County, Missouri states;" In 1826 Charles Hoss came from Kentucky and settled near Louisville.  He died at Truxton......"  In the "Journal of Davy K. Capps, written 1874-1885 (found on rootsweb.com- see the facts pg.) it states; " Dec. 26, 1879 in Truxton Charles HOSS aged 88/89 years.  He was born in Maryland in the year 1794 and married in 1826.  Mr. HOSS was, married four times.  His first and second wives war sister Nelley and Harriet CHOATE the fourth war sisters, Mrs. Lettie EIDSON and Mrs. Elizabeth COLBERT.  The later survises in the 76 year of her age.  Is the mother of Capt. COLBERT." Records indicate that Charles is buried in Pin Oak Cemetery in Warren County.

1840 US Census of Lincoln Co.,MO:  Head of Household, Charles Hoss: 1 male 20-30 yrs., 1 female 20-30 yrs.

Copy of Certificate of Land Patent, Warren County, MO Clerks Office: "Certificate No. 20655 ...Whereas Charles Hoss of Warren County, Missouri has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Palmyra whereby it appears that full payments has been made by the said Charles Hoss......Acccording to Act of Congress.......for the sale of Public Lands, for the East half of the South East quarter of Section thirty three in Township forty nine of Range three West in the District of Lands subject to sale at Palmyra, Missouri containing eighty acres......Given under my hand, at the City of Washington, the tenth day of November....1841....by President John Tyler"

Extracts of the Journal of Davy K. Capps, written 1874-75 (see.rootsweb.com/~molincol/diaries/di-capps-journal-1.htm for more information on Davy Capps Journal) "December 26, 1879 in Truxton Charles Hoss age 88/89 years.  He was born in Maryland in the year 1794 and married in 1826.  Mr. Hoss was, married four times.  His first and second wives war sister Nelley and Harriet Choate the third and fourth war sisters, Mrs. Lettie Eidson and Mrs. Elizabeth Colbert. The later survives in the 76 year of age is mother of Capt. Colbert."

 

Copy of a Bond, Lincoln Co., Missouri Courthouse: This bond certifies that Reuben W. Colbert and Henry F. Aston executors of the estate of Charles Hoss a principal sum of one thousand fifteen hundred dollars.  Reuben W. Colbert being duly sworn says that Elizabeth Hoss (widow) Mrs. Debora E. Stonebarger, Harriett Hoss, Catherine J. Aston, Matilda C. Eidson, Jessie A. Hoss (Elizabeth Hoss, Wm. T. Hoss heirs of Wm. H. Hoss) are legal heirs of Charles Hoss deceased and that he died with a will. (signed) Henry F. Aston, Reuben W. Colbert 29 December 1879, B.W. Wheeler, Judge.  Recorded in court at office in Troy, Missouri 14th January 1880.

 

Copy of Probate Document, Warren Co., MO Courthouse, "State of Missouri, County of Warren, September 21 (22)*, 1883, Received of Henry F. Aston and R. W. Colbert Exers of Charles Hoss deceased the sum of ten dollars said amount being left by will of Charles Hoss and to the heirs of William H. Hoss to wit five dollars to Elizabeth Hoss and five dollars to William Hoss.  Said Elizabeth Hoss being the only surviving heir.  J. H. Owings Curator of Elizabeth Hoss."
