The following listed Items are arranged by date order.  The list consists of documentation and information gathered from various sources.  As in any task of this nature, there may be errors.  We hope that by putting the pieces in one place we can put the puzzle together of the Hoss families in Lincoln, Montgomery and Warren Counties of Missouri.  Other documentation will be presented as time allows so check back often.



Item 1History of Lincoln County, Missouri by Goodspeed Publishing, 1888, Katherine  Linemann Library, St.Charles, MO.  "In 1826 Charles Hoss came from Kentucky and settled near Louisville.  He died at Truxton, December 26, 1879.

Item 4: Copy of Certificate of Land Patent, Warren County, MO Clerks Office: "Certificate No. 20655, Whereas Charles Hoss of Warren County, Missouri has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Palmyra whereby it appears that full payments has been made by the said Charles Hoss......Acccording to Act of Congress.......for the sale of Public Lands, for the East half of the South East quarter of Section thirty three in Township forty nine of Range three West in the District of Lands subject to sale at Palmyra, Missouri containing eighty acres......Given under my hand, at the City of Washington, the tenth day of November....1841....by President John Tyler"

Item 6: Copy of Certificate of Land Patent, Warren County, MO Clerks Office: "Certificate No. 21715 ..Whereas Charles Hoss of Warren County, Missouri has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Palmyra whereby it appears that full payments has been made by the said Charles Hoss......Acccording to Act of Congress.......for the sale of Public Lands, for the West half of the North East quarter of section thirty three, in Township forty nine of Range three West, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Palmyra, Missouri containing eighty acres......Given under my hand, at the City of Washington, the tenth day of March....1843....by President John Tyler"

 

Item 6A: Book F, pg. 401. Recorder of Deeds, Troy, Lincoln County, Missouri: "Know all men by these presents that -- Thomas P. Parke and Maryann Parke wife of said Thomas P. Parke of the Territory of ---- and county of Clayton for and in consideration of the sum of Fifty dollars to us in hand paid at and before the ---- and delivering of these presents, the receipt ---of is hereby acknowledged, have bargained, grantd and sold and so by these presents, give, grant, bargain and sell unto Jacob Hose of the State of Missouri and County of Warren, all our right title and interest in and to a certain tract or parcel of land lying and situated in the County of Lincoln and State of Missouri aforesaid, and known and distinguished on the plat of the general survey as being the North East quarter of section thirty township Fifty and Rand two west of the fifth principal meridian, which right --- have acauired  us being ligate of Abraham Estes deceased and -- the said Thomas P. Parke and Maryann Parke wife of said Thomas P. Parke may acquire unto the said Jacob Hose to him the said Jacob Hose as it now is.  To have and to hold unto him the said Jacob Hose his being and assigns forever to their only proper benefit and behoof and --- the said Thomas P. Parke and Maryann Parke bind ourselves to warrant and fefend the right of said land as far as our interest extends unto him the said Jacob Hose his heirs and assignes forever. In testimony whereof --- have here unto set our hand and affixed our seals this the twenty ninth day of July Eighteen hundred and forty three.  Thomas P. Parke (seal), Maryann Parke (Seal).  Be it remembered that on this first day of August in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and forty three before me a Justice of the Peace, within and for the County aforesaid personally came Thomas P. Parke and Maryann his wife both personally known to me to be the person whose names are subscribed to the foregoing instrument of writing as having executed the same and severally as knowledged the same to be their act and deed for the purpose therein mention.  she the said MaryAnn Parke being by me first made acquainted with the contents thereof and examined seperate and apart from her husband and whether she executes the said deed and relinquishes her dower to the land and tenements therein mentioned, voluntarily, freely and without compullsion or under influence of her said husband acknowledged and declared that she executes the said deed and relinquishes her dower in the said land and tenements therein mentioned voluntarily freely and without compulsion or under influence of her husband.  Taken and certified the day and year aforesaid.  Daniel Jameson, J.P."

 

Item 7: Copy of U.S. Land Patent, Certificate #2225, "Jane Earnest, Josiah Parke, Martha Hoss and William J. Estes of Lincoln County, Missouri, General Land Office  of Register of the Land Office at Palmyra....full payment made by all parties for the south east quarter of section thirty in township fifty one of range two west in the District of Lands Subject to the Sale at Palmyra Missouri, containing one hundred and sixty acres....signed by President John Tyler in the City of Washington, the 10th July 1844."

Item 29: Copies of Documents Found in Troy, MO Courthouse by Marylou Haltorf: Charles Hoss files a Petition to take Action for Bounty against Lincoln County.  It was filed July 28, 1868. It appears that Henry F. Aston filed a petition as administrator of Charles Hoss Estate, claiming that it bounty of 100 dollars was due to the heirs of Charles W. Hoss.  They claimed that at the August Term of 1864 the County Court of Lincoln County made an order to the effect that each and every person who enlisted in the Military Service of the United States would receive a bounty of 100 dollars and that Charles W. Hoss agreed to the aforesaid order.

 

Item 30: Copies of Documents Found in Troy, MO Courthouse by Marylou Haltorf: Summons, Charles Hoss vs. Lincoln County, served 3rd Aug. 1868. Sept. Term for 1868.  Henry F. Aston, Admn. of C.W. Hoss, Plaintiff vs. Lincoln County, Defendant.  Plaintiff states that during the August Term of 1864 the County Court of Lincoln County mad an order to the effect that each and every person who enlisted in the Military Service of the United States for whom said County raised a draft and was to pay Defendant a bounty of 100 dollars.  Plaintiff responded that in Sept. 1864, Charles W. Hoss, agreed by terms of the order, entered into service and was duly accredited to Lincoln County.  The Defendant by reason of the promises became indebted to Charles W. Hoss.  Plaintiff further states that Chas. W. Hoss departed this life on or about the  --- day of June 1865, and that up to the time, his death he, nor anyone for him had never been paid the 100 dollars.  Plaintiff also stated that although repeatedly requested, Defendant has failed and refused and still neglects and refuses to pay Plaintiff or any part thereof.  Plaintiff states that he is the Administrator and legal Representative of the Charles W. Hoss, deceased and offers proof upon request.  Defendant is indebted for the sum of 100 dollars, together with interest at the rate of six percent per annum from the 1st day of January 1865 for which Plaintiff asks Judgment and for costs of suit.  F. T. Williams, Atty for Plaintiff.    

 

Item 31:  Copies of Documents Found in Troy, MO Courthouse by Marylou Haltorf: Charles Hoss vs. Lincoln County, Filed June 16th 1869, Lincoln County Fall Term 1868, Charles Hoss Plaintiff vs. Lincoln County Defendant.  The county of Lincoln assigned the following: 1st, the petition does not show facts sufficient to constitute a cause of action.  2nd Under the law of (part of this unable to make out) the Father is not the only ---- of his child who ----- ----- ----- heirs but his brothers and sisters and father and mother inherit equally. 3rd. The petition shows only a contract with the County and if any one is entitled to secour it must be the administrator of the deceased and not our or all the heirs but the administrator who first applies the funds to the payment of debts and other balances of any is distributed among the heirs as by law provided.  A. V. McAlan(?), Atty. for Defendants.

"State of Missouri, County of Lincoln, Personally appears before me on the 8th day of September 1870 Charles Hoss and Elizabeth Colbert and was lawfully married as man and wife. (Signed) Thos. J. Item 38: Copies of Documents Found in Troy, MO Courthouse by Marylou Haltorf: Summons issued to Lincoln County. Henry F. Aston, Plaintiff vs. Lincoln County, Defendant.  Document references petition filed.  Defendant admits that the said court at the time charge, did make an order that 100 dollars was to be paid to each soldier who should volunteer for the term of 12 months in the Missouri Volunteers for the United States Service, to be credited to the.  Defendant denies that said Charles Hoss was at the time he volunteered (if he ever did so volunteer) in the Missouri Volunteers as a citizen of Lincoln County. Defendant denies Charles Hoss was associated to said Lincoln County.  Defendant denies that said Plaintiff (Henry F. Aston) is the administrator Charles Hoss. Filed  December 23, 1870, Lincoln County Circuit Court

 

Item 39: Copy of Marriage Record from Lincoln Co., MO Clerks Office, pg 248 "State of Missouri County of Lincoln Personally appears before me on the 29th day of October 1871 William Hoss and Mary Jane Morris and was lawfully married as man and wife. (signed) Thomas T. Johnson M.G., Recorded December 7, 1871, Wm. Colbert Recorder."

 

Item 40: Missouri Obituaries, July 1872-1873, December 1874, Vol. 2, Page 7, The St. Louis Christian Advocate, Katherine Linemann Library, St. Charles, MO: "DAVAULT- Peter died at this his home in Montgomery Co., MO, 16 Apr 1872, aged 64 years.  He was born in Leesburg, Washington Co., Tenn, 28 March 1808.  He was married to Miss Mary Hass in 1831; moved to MO in 1832, and joined the Methodist Church in 1834 under the preaching of Rev. Andrew Monroe.  For 40 years he lived in the same community, thirty-eight of which was in fellowship with the Church.  He raised 8 children, all men and women grown, four of which are ornaments to our Church, and of which fills the chair of Professor of Languages, Mathematics and Physics in Central Female College, Lexington, MO.  One of his last acts of his life was to give 150.00 for the erection of a church in New Florence, near by where he lived.  He lived to see it completed, and heard one sermon preached in it- the dedication sermon by Bishop Marvin.  His funeral was preached in it by the writer on the fourth Sabbath in July.  His lonely and bereaved widow is waiting to cross over and be with him whom she walked in this life for 40 years. - H H Craig."

 

Item 41: Copy of a Bond, Lincoln Co., Missouri Courthouse, "Isaac H. Owings, principal and S.T. Ingram & Wm. - Mabry as securities....one thousand dollars....(signed by all three named).  Isaac H. Owings says that Mary J. Hoss widow of dec'd. and Harriett Elizabeth Hoss- about two years of age and one not yet born.....only legal heirs....of William H. Hoss....(signed) J. H. Owings....14th day of February 1877. (signed) E.N. Benfils, Judge.  Recorded Lincoln county, office of Troy 14th February 1877"

 

Item 42: Article written by Mrs. Walden (Elsie) Cope on Belleville in Montgomery Co., MO: Belleville in 1878 was located on the Blackburn acreage about eight miles southeast of Bellflower.  Jonesburg was the nearest railroad at the time the farmers yarded their cattle at Belleville.  Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoss ran this Post Office and Stage Stop and it was named after their daughter Ada Belle. "Belleville was a Post Office located approximately two and a half miles east of Price's Branch.   It was known as Belleville and used as a post office and stoppin-overnight place or Half-Way House on the way to Jonesburg from Silex, Olney, and Truxton areas.  Farmers would drive their fat hogs and cattle by here on the way to railcars in Jonesburg that would take them on to market in St. Louis.  They would get here by evening, eat and sleep overnight here, then finish their trip the next day.  The Hoss family operated this for many years.  This building still stands and has been kept in repair by its owners.  The east end on the main floor has the shelving, postal box holes, and fireplace as they were. (NOTE: Elsie Cope, as of this date 2004, lives in Truxton, MO and is a cousin to Gail Cope Haferkamp)

 

Item 43: Extracts of the Journal of Davy K. Capps, written 1874-75 (see.rootsweb.com/~molincol/diaries/di-capps-journal-1.htm for more information on Davy Capps Journal) "December 26, 1879 in Truxton Charles Hoss age 88/89 years.  He was born in Maryland in the year 1794 and married in 1826.  Mr. Hoss was, married four times.  His first and second wives war sister Nelley and Harriet Choate the third and fourth war sisters, Mrs. Lettie Eidson and Mrs. Elizabeth Colbert. The later survives in the 76 year of age is mother of Capt. Colbert."

 

Item 43A: Copy of Will from Troy, Lincoln County, Missouri obtained by Betty Greiwe and Gail Cope Haferkamp: " I Charles Hoss of County of Lincoln in the state of Missouri knowing the certainty of my death and the uncertainty of life. I Charles Hoss make htis my last will and testament in the name of God Amen- First my will is that my executors herein after to be appointed shall sell at public sale all my personal estate.  Second my will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be fully paid.  Third my will is that my widow Elizabeth Hoss have have all my household and kitchen furniture including all beds and beading and to hold and occupy the mantion house where we now reside live and to have and use all the assets during from any part of my real estate and that my excecutors pay to my widow four hundred dollars out of the first moneys comin in to their hands after paying funeral expenses.  Fourth my will is that after the death of my widow all my real estate shall be sold at the public sale for cash is on time as my executors may think best for my estate.  Fifth my will is that my children here named Deborah E. Stonebarger, Herad Hoss, Catherine J. Aston, Matilda C. Eudson, Jesse A. Hoss the five here named shall share and share alike in the distribution of my estate.  Sixth my will is that the two heirs of my son William H. Hoss, now deceased shall have five dollars eash the names of the two heirs of William H. Hoss deceased are as follows Elizabeth Hoss and William T. Hoss.  My son William H. Hoss having in my lifetime all all rady received more than what will be a share for the others of my heirs.  Seventh my will is and I hereby make constitute and appoint Henry - Aston and R. W. Colbert my will and lawful executors to carry out this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of December A.D. 1878.  Charles (his X mark) Hoss, Witness Isaac Owings and Charles P. Allen."

(Along with a copy of the will was the following): "State of Missouri, County of Lincoln, Be it remembered that on this 29th day of December A.D. 1879 personally appeared before the undersigned B.W. Wheeler Judge of the Probate within and for the County of Lincolnn in the State of Missouri Isaac H. Owings one of the subscribing witnesses to the annexed will of Charles Hoss, decd.....etc......"

(Along with the above): State of Missouri, County of Lincoln, dated 31 December 1879....basically states that Charles P. Allen carried out his duties as executor for Charles Hoss Decd. by the Judge of the Probate Court of the County of Lincoln without delay. Signed by B.W. Wheeler, Judge of the Probate for Lincoln Co. MO.

 

Item 44: Copy of Probate Document, Warren Co., MO Courthouse, (Document has several items written on top and to the side that appear to be a record of receipts given to Elizabeth E. Morris for the care of children, some of the writing is not legible) "Warren County Missouri May 11, 1880- Estate of Mary J. Hoss, --  to Elizabeth E. Morris, cooking washing tending nursing and waiting on Mary J. Hoss descd. and William T. Hoss & Harriett E. Hoss the two last named children of Mary J. Hoss from October 1st 1878 until February 12th 1880."

 

Item 45: Copy of Bond, Lincoln Co., MO Courthouse, "....Reuben W. Colbert.... Principal sum eight hundred dollars, Reuben W, Colbert being duly sworn, say that Wm. Colbert- Reuben W. Colbert- Mrs. Polly Hancock-Mrs. Elizabeth - Hoss (Rosana M; Wm. P.; Virgil B.; Susan H.; Reuben W.* Colbert- Heirs of Reuben W. Colbert) Mrs. R.J. Copenhavers Heirs being: P.M. Copenhavers, Mrs. Elizabeth Poyses (?), Susan Copenhavers are the only heir.....of Elizabeth Hoss.........Deceased died without a will.  That he will make a perfect inventory.......(signed) R. W. Colbert...........Subscribed and sworn to before me, this 18th day of March 1880 B.W. Wheeler, Judge.  Recorded Book D of Bonds on pg. 30.......office of Troy Missouri, 18th March 1880." *(written on side of document- not all legible) Heirs of Victoria Mann/Nunn? to Wm. ------

Item 49A: Obituary from the Montgomery County Standard, (2/142, pg. 107), Montgomery County Historical Society: "Hoss, Mrs. Caroline N., died in Deer Lodge, Montana, November 22, 1895; aged 62 years.  Left a widow with five small children a few months before the close of the Civil War.  Her five children, Mrs. J.H. Meyers, A.D., Nat T., Lon R., and F.H. Hoss were with her ------.  Born in 1833 in Montgomery County, Missouri Judge Nathanial Dryden, her father, emigrated from Virginia to Missouri----. Brothers of Mrs. C. N. Hoss were-----Honorable John D. S. Dryden, Uncle Fred Dryden, Honorable Lee J. Dryden-----.  Her nephews were Nat C. Dryden and John W. Dryden.

Mabry near Gamma, July 7.  All of her children and grandchildren were present except J.P. and wife who were kept away by the death of their infant son, Paul.  Present were: her 3 sons, Tom, Trav, and George Mabry and their families; her 2 daus., Mrs. Mattie Morris and Mrs. Kate McKelvey and their families; 24 grandchildren, and her brother, Henry Hoss and wife.  Mr. Hoss is 79y of age.  The occasion was saddened by the announcement of the death of the infant son of J.P. Mabry and wife.    17 July 1903"

 

Item 52A: Missouri Miscellaneous, Katherine Linemann Libary, St. Charles, MO, pg. 75:  Abraham Hoss, who was raised in Montgomery and learned the printing trade under Tyler W. Parker, came with the Montana editors to the World's Fair during press week, and is still visiting in this section.  He has visited relatives in Pike Co., then came to Montgomery to visit the Drydens who are his cousins.  He entered the STANDARD office in 1865 while it was in charge of Robert E. Verdier and T.W. Parker, and "played the devil" for about a year then moved to Louisiana, MO.  He has been in Montana several years, in the newspaper business.  His brother is Gov. Toole's private secretary. 3 June 1904

 

Item 53: Obituary of Georgiana Hoss, Copy has no notations of where the obituary was found: Georgiana Hoss was born February 12, 1859, near Bellflower, MO., where she grew into womanhood.  In Oct. 1876 she married to H.H. Owings who died in 1877.  She was married to John S. Hanway in 1883 with whom she removed to Kansas where they remained until about a year ago when they came to Missouri on account of the health of the deceased.  Mrs. Hanway passed away from the scenes of this life at the home of Hon. S.T. Aydelotte, July 10, 1904.  When a girl 14 years of age she united with the Methodist church of which she was a consistent and active member until her death.  She leaves a husband, father, mother, six sisters, two brothers and a large company of relatives to mourn her departure.  The funeral services were conducted on Sunday at the Pin Oak church by Rev. Pennewell of this city.  The bereaved have the sympathy of a large number of friends and acquaintances.

Hoss (Republican) Representative from Montgomery County; born October 23, 1862 at Pin Oak, Missouri; educated in the public schools at Glasgow, Missouri and in Lewis College.  He is a teacher and farmer.  He was born on the farm in eastern Montgomery County where formerly lived the mother of General John J. Pershing, and, with the exception of three and one-half years in Lincoln County, Missouri, he has made his home in his native county.  On August 18,1896, he married Miss Florence Muns of Montgomery City.  He was elected to the legislature in 1928, serving in the 55th General Assembly as member of the following committees: Agriculture, Education and Pensions."

Missouri Historical Society 6-43: Ollie Blanche Hoss, daughter of Henry and Martha Hoss, born April 10, 1968 near Jonesburg, Missouri.  Following a period of several years of failing health, she passed away at 3:30 pm on September 6, 1944, in the Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 25 days.  She married Joseph William Cushman on December 13, 1893.  To this union were born 5 children: Madge, Ione, Thomas, Naomi and Willard.  Her husband and two daughters, Ione and Naomi, have preceded her in death. At an early age, she became a member of the Methodist church.  Following her marriage she untied with Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church which membership she held until her death.  She leaves to mourn her departure three children: Madge of Middletown, Thomas of Rolla, MO, and Willard of Amarillo, Texas; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Thomas H. Cushman and Mrs. J. Willard Cushman; three grandchildren; Thomas Jr., Joyce Ann and James Edward Cushman who truly adored her; one siter, Miss Lucy Hoss of Bellflower, MO; one brother J.B. Hoss of Middletown, MO., who for many years has made his home with her and has tenderly cared for her through all her years of failing health..........; two sister-in-laws, Mrs. Eva Heaton of Middletown, Mr. and Mrs. Will Hoss of Pacific, MO; a number of nieces and nephews and many relatives and friends...........etc.
