Descendants of Jacob Hoss of Lincoln County, Missouri

Records from various researchers have stated that Jacob Hoss settled in Lincoln County, Missouri about 1826.  As you will see by the following information, Jacob, his wife, and daughter were in Lincoln Co. between 1823 and 1824. We know this from the births and deaths of their first two children. Jacob married Martha 'Patty' Berryman on 4 September 1817 in Warren Co., Kentucky.  Jacob Hoss appears in the 1820 census of Logan County, Kentucky shown with his wife and one male between 16-18 years of age and one female under 10.  At the present time we are unable to locate Jacob and his family in 1830 census, however, the birth record of their third daughter indicates that they were in St. Louis, Missouri (perhaps staying with family?). The next appearance of Jacob Hoss in Lincoln Co. is from the 1840 Census.  Jacob Hoss as head of household (male between age  40-50), and listed 1 male between age 15-20 (Henry), 1 female under 5 (Martha), 1 female age 5-10 (Eliza Jane), 1 female age 15-20 (Mary Ann) and 1 female between age 40-50 (his wife Martha).  In 1844 Jacob Hoss (as well as Philip Mabry) was listed on the Poll Book for Lincoln Co. in Waverly Township. All documentation on where Jacob Hoss was born shows he was born in Kentucky with one exception; the 1900 census on Henry Washington states his father was born in Maryland.  Jacob's wife was Martha 'Patty' Berryman who was born in Kentucky.   In 1850 Jacob Hoss does not appear on the census record that we have been able to locate. It is possible that both Jacob and Martha died between 1844 and 1850.  Jacob's son Henry Washington Hoss does not appear on the 1850 census, however, Jacob's two youngest daughters appear living with their sister Mary Ann Hoss and her husband Aaron Beck.  It is possible that Jacob and his wife Martha died during the period of 1847-1849 when there was worldwide outbreak of influenza and a cholera epidemic. St. Louis lost over 3,000 lives between 1848-1849 from the cholera epidemic.  As to the birthdate of Jacob Hoss we date it between 1790-1800 and records have indicated that it was either in Kentucky or Maryland.  Because of the 1900 census of MO showing Henry Washington Hoss's father being born in Maryland, this compiler will take that record as accurate rather than Henry's death certificate which his son William was informant and had Henry's father, Jacob, being born in Kentucky.

We place Martha 'Patty' Berryman Hoss's date of birth between 1790-1800 in Kentucky. They married in Kentucky.

There is no documentation to prove that this Jacob Hoss is from the line of Jacob Hoss that married Mary Boone/Bohne from Washington Co., Tennessee.

1830 U.S. Federal Census- To date, we have been unable to locate Jacob on the 1830 census.  However, it appears by the death certificate of Eliza Jane Hoss Mabry that they were in St. Louis, MO at the time of her birth.

1840 U.S. Federal Census of Lincoln County, MO, Lincoln City:
Jacob Hoss (head): 1 male age 15-20, 1 male age 40-50, 1 female age under 5, 1 female age 5-10, 1 female age 15-20 , 1 female age 40-50.

Poll Book, 1844, Lincoln Co., MO: Taken from Missouri Genealogical Gleanings 1840 & Beyond, Volume 1, by Sherida K. Eddlemon, Heritage Books, Inc., Published 1994, Page 65.  Names Jacob Hoss and Philip Mayberry.

Records of Maxine Bickham indicated that Jacob Hoss settled in Lincoln Co., MO in 1826.  It is evident by the birth of his son Henry that they settled in Lincoln Co., by late 1823 or early 1824 (Henry was born in May 1824).  Also see depositions under Jacob's father, Michael Hoss.

Jacob Hoss does not appear in the 1850 census.  Between 1848-49 there was an epidemic of cholera.  St. Louis lost over 3,000 lives during that epidemic and the cholera probably spread rapidly to outlying areas including Lincoln Co.  In 1847 to 1848 Influenza was worldwide.

All documents obtained so far indicate that Jacob was born in KY with one exception and that is the 1900 census of Montgomery Co., MO. which shows Henry Washington Hoss living with son, William H. Hoss.  Census states Henry's father was b. in Maryland and mother b. KY.

Lincoln Co. Missouri Marriages, Book2, Pg. 108: Beck, Aaron T. to Mary Ann Hoss, Sept. 23, 1847

Lincoln Co. Missouri Marriages, Book 2, Pg. 335: Hopkins, James to Martha Hoss, May 31, 1857

Death Certificate of Henry Washington Hoss states that Jacob was his father who was born in KY.  Mother was ______ Berryman b. KY.  Informant was Henry's son William H. Hoss.

Death Certificate of Eliza Jane Hoss Mabry states her father as Jacob Hoss b. KY and mother Martha Berryman (birthplace unknown).

1900 Census of Montgomery Co., MO for Eliza J. Mabry stated her father was born in KY and mother was born in KY.
